CapileiraWelcome to our 2010 web site where you will find full details of our painting holidays in Andalucia, southern Spain. Here is all the information you need to be able to book a painting holiday with us in Capileira in the Sierra Nevadas

We list various types of accommodation, with our three star hotel offering Bed & Breakfast full or half-board, a two star village hotel offering the same, a village Pension offering just Bed & Breakfast, or perhaps a self-catering option, either in the village or in a rural setting. Our village, Capileira has more than a dozen various bars and restaurants, ranging from an excellent Michelin-starred restaurant, to a mainly vegetarian establishment, and an equally excellent pizzeria which serves wild boar and other exciting dishes as well as pizzas! There is an abundance of choice, and many of our clients enjoy browsing the options. For those who prefer to self-cater, we have two small supermarkets, two bakeries, and deliveries of fresh fish, fruit and vegetables.

If you are a member of a painting group or art club or have close friends, you may be interested to know that we can offer a 15% discount for advance group bookings of four or more people. We may also be able to reschedule dates for group bookings in order for you to be able to take advantage of cheaper mid-week flights. Please enquire for details. We also offer a 15% discount for partners who do not wish to paint, and we can arrange alternative activities if required. These include walking, mountain biking, horse riding, flamenco dancing and more, both in Capileira and the adjacent village of Bubion.

Olive treeTuition can be tailored to the needs of the absolute beginner who needs help with basic drawing and painting skills, and for beginning students we offer a structured sequence of lessons which can be built upon at home using follow up material provided for this purpose. For the intermediate painter there is advice on developing existing techniques and acquiring new ones. You will be supported in exploring new ways of working, perhaps even tackling a new medium for the first time. For the advanced artist there is the opportunity to discover new motifs and a topography that is unique in it’s magnificence. We know all the best vantage points and the best times to see them. We never take more than a maximum of six clients at any one time to ensure plenty of one to one attention.

We are able to be flexible because we are a very small husband and wife team who have lived and worked as year round residents of the Alpujarras since 2001, so we know the Granada area and it’s facilities very well indeed. We use local traders and service providers, and pride ourselves on our excellent business support network. We know what is available and who to call on for the best service, and we pass these benefits directly to our clients. We can also organise transport for trips to Granada, and book Orange treetickets for you to visit the Alhambra. If you wish, we could also help you to book or can advise about the next stage of your travel itinerary here in Spain. If you need any information regarding your itinerary or the area, email us and we will reply by return. You could even supply your telephone number and we will call you if you wish.

The last twelve months have been a period of great uncertainty for very many people, and the unusually low levels of tourism in 2009 have reflected this. Happily there is now a renewed spirit of optimism, and a sense of determination that inspires confidence in a brighter future, so take the plunge, take a break, book a holiday with us. We guarantee to do our very best to ensure you wont be disappointed.

The origin of Capileira goes back to the time of the Goths, although some believe that it could be earlier. Its name derives from the word Latin capillaris-e which means 'higher place'. Because of its impregnable character, Capileira was one of the last places to be conquered by Arabs and later by Christians. Capileira was scene of fighting between Boabdil and uncle El Zagal. After taking Granada, Muslim population remained until the rebellion of 1568 when the Moors were expelled by Philip II. Later the town was repopulated by settlers from other parts of the Kingdom.

Bubión is a village in La Alpujarra region of Granada in Spain. It is located at 1,300 metres above sea level. Together with Capileira (to the north) and Pampaneira (to the south) it has become a focus for the tourist trade in La Alpujarra, because of the spectacular location of the three villages (Pueblos Blancos) Capileira on the gorge of the Río Poqueira. The three villages have been designated as a (Conjunto Histórico Artístico), a region of special artistic and historical importance.

Bubion is thought to have been founded in Roman times, and in any case it certainly goes back to the Moorish invasion of the 7th century. Under the Moors, it was under the authority of Ugíjar. In the 16th century the village supported Abén Humeya in his revolt against the oppression of the morisco population.
